Destination Wedding: Why Michigan is the Perfect Locale

//  by The Wedding Shoppe

Michigan is unique in so many ways, including being the only state in the US with two peninsulas! Our state motto holds true that “if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you”. Not only does Michigan have picture-perfect locations and beautiful lakes on all sides, it also holds a wide variety of beautiful wedding venues, from rustic barns to hotel ballrooms and waterfront golf courses. Whether you choose to marry during the colder months or wait for a summer wedding, here are some of our favorite reasons why Michigan is the perfect locale for your wedding.

Gorgeous Wedding Venues

For those who can’t decide on a wedding venue, Michigan has a great selection and variety of locations! Whether you’re looking for a waterfront wedding or a rustic barn setting, there’s a little something for everyone. If you find yourself leaning more toward an outdoor wedding, Traverse City in northern Michigan has beautiful views of Lake Michigan with rolling fields in the background. It also has a more small-town feel than other cities and hosts a week-long cherry festival each July should you marry during that month.

Grand Rapids is also a popular wedding city in western Michigan, with beautiful beaches and plenty of things to do for you and your guests. While Grand Rapids is also located near Lake Michigan, you have more of a variety of venues such as barns, golf courses, and hotels in the area. As the most popular city in Michigan for weddings, Detroit seems to offer the most options for your big day. With everything from a bustling city to smaller suburbs, you’ll have your choice of ballrooms, luxurious hotels, and scenic outdoor locations.

Local Cuisine

Michigan is home to some of the best local flavors from throughout the state. Incorporating the regional foods into your menu can give you and your guests a memorable, authentic experience during your time in Michigan while also tasting delicious! Regions such as Traverse City are great for fresh produce while others are home to more comfort foods. As a state famous for its apples, you can also choose to fuse in some inspired foods such as apple pie, dumplings and more. You can even incorporate a little Michigan pride in your wedding with cherry treats from Traverse City (the tart cherry capital of the world), mitten-shaped desserts or even some Detroit-inspired automobile goodies.

Sights to See

Whether you live in Michigan or are hosting a destination wedding in the state, it’s always great to have things to do in the surrounding areas for your guests. Michigan is full of local sights to see around the entire state, no matter which wedding venue you choose. If you’re hosting a waterfront wedding, guests are free to enjoy attractions such as kayak tours, riverboat excursions, harbor cruises and more. Museums are also popular amongst the cities including the Henry Ford Museum and Motown Museum for history buffs. For your guests that love the outdoors, Michigan has plenty of beautiful natural landmarks to see such as Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Isle Royale National Park. Be sure to check the activities ahead of time to see if they’ll be operating during your wedding month as well!

Enjoy the Seasons

Michigan is lucky enough to enjoy all four seasons throughout the year, but that can also lead to some pretty extreme temperatures. The winter months can become harsh with snowfall and frozen lakes, so be sure to check a calendar before setting your date. If you are truly set on having a winter wedding, we recommend choosing a date in between seasons so you aren’t dealing with the freezing cold or the melting heat in summer. Fall and spring are generally milder and you’ll still get to enjoy a bit of weather depending on your wedding date. This will also help your guests arrive in Michigan without any weather delays or any effects on your outdoor wedding plans.

Still can’t decide on a perfect location for your big day? Check out our list of favorite outdoor wedding venues in Michigan or wedding venues in West Michigan to get started. You also don’t want to forget to book an appointment with us to choose the dress of your dreams today!
